NetScanner Tool Description
NetScanner is a ping sweep utility that can scan
any range of IPv4 addresses looking for active devices. This utility
can operate outside your subnet and even across the internet. Use
it to locate active devices and gather information about those computers.
Use this utility in conjunction with the Port Scanner tool for a
full accounting of each IP address. This ping sweep utility operates
in a multithreaded parallel mode meaning more than one IP address
is contacted simultaneously.
Features:
- Ping Sweep.
Each host is sent ping packets according to the parameters defined
in setup. The ping packets are of two types: 1. Windows style
ICMP echo packets, 2. UPD UNIX style pings can be optionally
sent if the ICMP echo packets fail to elicit a response. The
results of the ping test are shown using the Time and Responding
IP Address column.
- Hostname translation.
Every IP address in the range or list is resolved to a hostname
if you require that information. This feature is optional.
- MAC address.
NetBIOS queries will obtain a MAC address if the target is a
Microsoft Windows machine that has an unprotected NetBIOS TCP
port 139. If the target responds, you can also get the Remote
Machine Name table for viewing using the double-click drilldown
reports. NetBIOS requests can be made regardless of whether
a ping packet gets a response. This feature is optional.
- Subnet Mask.
This is a feature which sends a ICMP address mask request and
displays any responding information. Response is a function
of the target operating system, ie. Windows 98 machines will
respond, but Windows XP machines will not respond. Subnet Mask
requests can be made regardless of whether a ping packet gets
a response. This feature is optional.
- ARP. Following
completion of a sweep, NetScanner makes ARP requests to responding
IPs and adds any MAC address information into the results if
responses are obtained. ARP is useful only for the local subnet.
- Hosts File Editor.
The hosts file has been used historically to provide an instant
hostname/IP address translation without going to DNS.
- Double-click on any IP address
once the sweep is complete for a full report (searchable, printable,
can be saved to disk). These reports cover all the data shown
in the display for the specific IP address and they also show
the full whois report and the ARP cache report--that is, if
you have requested those things.
- Export list of responding active IPs
to NetTopography and Port Scanner.
- Import Target IP List from File.
- Graphing of Ping response times vs. target.
The graph can be printed in color or copied to the clipboard.
