Service Lookup Tool Description
The Service Lookup tool is a multipurpose reference tool
that does four main things.
- It does a lookup to find out what service is
supposed to be using a port number and vice versa.
- Edit the winsock services database. Use this editor
to find out what a port number is supposed to be used for.
- Edit the winsock protocols database.
- Update the small 'OEM' services database
that came with your operating system with the much larger official
port assignments services database maintained by IANA.org. We
provide a method to roll back the updates. Updated versions
of the database are provided with each new version of NetScanTools
Pro.
These databases are used by network programs to
convert common service or protocol names to numbers used in communicating
with Microsoft's implementation of TCP/IP also known as winsock.
