IDENT Server Description
The IDENT Server is a special tool that allows you
to activate an 'IDENT'-like (or AUTH per RFC 1413) server that listens
on TCP port 123 for IDENT requests. An IDENT server is supposed
to provide a means to identify the user of a particular TCP connection.
But our server only tells the requestor what you want them to know.
Our IDENT server can be used to log incoming IDENT requests, ie.
find out what IP address is making the request and when. Plus you
can configure it to always send back one of five response
messages with whatever username you choose. YOU select the type
of ident message they see. In effect, this is not a real IDENT server,
but more of a 'honeypot' that mimics the IDENT protocol.
This window controls the on/off state of the IDENTserver
and allows you to:
- Configure the server.
- View the IDENT server log file.
The IDENT protocol is sometimes required by ISPs
for sending email when you are not sending mail from within the
IP address range of the ISP. This server can be easily turned off
and on. Default is OFF. This IDENT server is not a 'service' program,
in other words it only operates when NetScanTools Pro is running
and only if it is enabled.
